Chengdu

W Chengdu mieliśmy dwa zadania: zobaczyć pandy i pojeść syczuańskiego jedzenia. Udało nam się wykonać oba.

Podróż do Panda Base transportem publicznym okazała się bardzo łatwa, mimo że nie ma już specjalnego autobusu dla turystów, który kiedyś tam jeździł (podróż powrotna to inna historia). Wstaliśmy rano i dotarliśmy na miejsce dziesięć minut po otwarciu, co naprawdę wyszło nam na dobre. Ludzie już tam byli, ale w porównaniu do tłumów, które widzieliśmy wychodząc, to było nic.

Pandy to jedne z najbardziej leniwych zwierząt na świecie. Praktycznie cały czas jadły, siedząc lub leżąc na stertach babmbusa, a kawałki patyków wypadały im z pysków i lądowały na brzuchach, w stylu Potwora Ciasteczkowego. Widzieliśmy też malutkie pandy, przesłodkie, i pandy czerwone, które znamy z zoo w Wellington.

W oba wieczory, które spędziliśmy w Chengdu, jedliśmy w tym samym miejscu, w restauracji, która podobno wynalazła potrawę mapo tofu. Jej nie jedliśmy, ale to, co zamówiliśmy, było pyszne, chociaż nie tak ostre, jak się spodziewałam. Trafiliśmy też na jedną dziwną potrawę, którą zamówiliśmy myśląc, że to bakłażan, a była to potrawka z kury jedwabistej. Była pełna kości, tak jak tu często podaje się kurczaka, no i smakowała jak kurczak, ale fioletowe mięso było trochę dziwne. Ta restauracja była jedną z najbardziej popularnych restauracji, w jakich byliśmy. Tłumek ludzi ustawiał się przy wejściu z numerkami ręcznie wypisanymi na kawałku papieru, wydawanymi przez dziewczynę przy wejściu (nazwanie jej Maître d' to trochę za dużo) :-)

Szkoda, że nie spędziliśmy więcej czasu w Syczuan, żeby sobie pojeść więcej ich jedzenia, ale następnym przystankiem było Kunming w prowincji Yunnan, gdzie też nie oszczędzają ostrych przypraw.

We had two tasks for Chengdu: see the pandas and eat Sichuan food. We succeeded at both.

The trip to the Panda Base on public transport turned out to be very easy, even though the special tourist bus that used to go there has been cancelled (the trip back was another matter, though). We got up early and got there ten minutes after it opened, which worked out very well. There were people there already, but compared to the crowds we saw as we were leaving, it was nothing.

The pandas are some of the laziest animals on Earth. They were eating pretty much all the time, sitting or lying in piles of bamboo, and letting the scraps fall all over their bellies, Cookie Monster style. We saw some baby pandas, cuteness itself, and red pandas, which we know from the Wellington Zoo.

Both nights we stayed in Chengdu, we ate at the same place, the restaurant that supposedly invented mapo tofu. We didn't have it, but we did have some amazing dishes, although they weren't as spicy as I had expected. One weird thing that we ordered thinking it would be eggplant was a silkie dish. It was full of bones, like chicken here often is, and it tasted like chicken, but the purple colour of the flesh was a bit bizarre. It was probably one of the busiest restaurants we've ever been to, with people crowding at the entrance with handwritten paper numbers that the girl at the door was giving out (calling her a Maître d' would be an overstatement) :-)

I wish we could have stayed in Sichuan longer to enjoy more of its food, but the next stop was Kunmning, in Yunnan, which is also generous with chillis.
